Funerals (The Rite of Christian Burial)

Paschal Candle

For Christians, the Rite of Christian Burial brings hope and consolation to the living. While proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ and witnessing to the Christian hope in the resurrection, the funeral rite also recalls to bereaved families God’s mercy and love and meets the human need to turn always to God in times of crisis.

Please consult with your Funeral Director as to how arrangements are to be made with the church. A representative from the church can aid you in the selection of appropriate readings and music for the funeral Mass, as well as answer any questions you may have regarding the Mass or eulogy.

Choosing Music

The following list of music is offered as a guide to help you in choosing appropriate music for a funeral Mass. This is by no means a complete or exhaustive list and your choices are not limited to those listed. There is, however, a variety of styles from which to choose - from traditional to contemporary, and our list does contain the most familiar and oft requested hymns. Saint John Parish uses the hymnal Breaking Bread, published by OCP.

Links to the audio samples will take you to another website where you may listen to all or a part of the song.

While we do try to honor special music requests, please note that the text of your music selections must be sacred and should come from a reputable sacred music publisher. Popular secular songs are better shared with family and friends in a non-liturgical gathering. Pre-recorded music may not be played during the funeral rite.

It is the policy of St. John's church that one of our experienced cantors be contracted to sing.

Contact our Music Director Paul Hoffman by email or by calling (617) 610-2255 if you have any questions regarding music for the funeral rite.
